Most custom metal projects do not fail at the drawing stage — they fail at the handover from prototype to production. This Canadian review captures the exact moment that handover begins.

StageSingle test-fit part, on the way to mass production

What the buyer needed

A part to test-fit before committing to volume. This is the correct way to de-risk an offshore project: buy one, check it against the real assembly, then release the production order. It also puts the burden of dimensional accuracy on the first article, because there is no second chance once tooling is cut.

How we made it

For a test-fit part the goal is to produce the geometry that the production process will produce — not a hand-finished one-off. Where the volume route will be stamping or progressive die work, the prototype is made by laser cutting, bending and machining to the same nominal dimensions, so that what arrives is representative of what the tool will later make.

Dimensional verification is done on a coordinate measuring machine and shipped with the part, so the buyer can compare the inspection record against their own assembly measurements rather than guessing where a discrepancy came from.

The verified review

Left on our Alibaba.com storefront on 14 November 2024, five stars, verified purchase:

“I have received the product and I’m going to get it test fitted and know that everything will be perfect”

Our reply at the time — and still the answer we give at this stage:

“Looking forward to your test result, hope we can start mass production ASAP”

Why this matters

The review is a snapshot of a project at its most fragile point. A buyer who has just received a prototype and is about to test it is deciding whether to place a production order. Getting that first part dimensionally right, and being available while the buyer measures it, is what converts a prototype order into a production order — and it is why we treat first-article inspection as a deliverable rather than an internal step.
