Protolabs and Beijing JCEN are both metal parts manufacturers, and they are built around opposite ideas. Protolabs industrialises speed: upload a CAD file, get an automated quote with manufacturability feedback within hours, and receive machined parts in as little as one day. Beijing JCEN industrialises process depth and unit cost: a single plant in China where the tooling, the stamping, the forming and the finishing all happen under one roof.

This page is written for engineers and buyers who have to pick one. Every Protolabs figure below is taken from the public Protolabs website. Every Beijing JCEN figure comes from our own published capability pages. Where a number is not published, we say so rather than estimate it.

Protolabs Overview

Protolabs is a digital manufacturing company built on automation and its own production equipment, and it also operates an extended partner network. Its homepage describes it as offering digital manufacturing from early prototyping to final production across four services: injection moulding, CNC machining, 3D printing and sheet metal fabrication. The certification line it publishes is ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016, AS9100D and ITAR. Its stated workflow is to upload a CAD file, receive DFM analysis and real-time pricing within a few hours, and start manufacturing, with machined parts in as fast as one day. It states that it works with more than 90 per cent of Fortune 100 companies in its target industries, and lists aerospace, automotive, consumer electronics and medical.

Its sheet metal service is positioned around fast runs of simple sheet parts: its own description is up to 500 quality sheet metal parts in days, with instant quotes, interactive manufacturability feedback, six sheet metal materials, and finishing from welding and hardware insertion to powder coating and silk screening. CNC tolerances are stated as down to plus or minus 0.001 in (0.020 mm) through its digital network.

Beijing JCEN Overview

Beijing JCEN is a factory-direct sheet metal and metal parts manufacturer. We are headquartered in Beijing with our plant in Nanpi County, Hebei, and we have been in production since 1998. The plant covers 15,000 m2 and runs 6 production lines with 85 people. Laser cutting, press-brake bending, stamping, deep drawing, welding, CNC machining and surface finishing are all in-house, including our own tool room. We hold ISO 9001:2015 (registration 34025Q30296R0S), IATF 16949 and ISO 14001. Our published working tolerances are plus or minus 0.1 mm for forming and plus or minus 0.005 mm for machining. Samples ship in 7 days, quotes include a line-by-line DFM review and are returned within 24 hours, and production runs 20 to 30 working days. There is no minimum order quantity.

Where Beijing JCEN Has a Clear Advantage

  1. Unit cost on repeat production volumes. Protolabs is engineered around speed, and its published strengths are one-day machining and up-to-500-part sheet metal runs. Our cost structure is built for programmes that repeat: no platform or network layer, tooling and production in the same plant, and pricing that improves with annual volume rather than with urgency.
  2. Stamping and progressive dies, with the tool built in-house. Protolabs does not list stamping as a service line. We build progressive dies in our own tool room and run them on 25 to 400 t presses, which is what a volume programme actually needs after the prototype is approved.
  3. Deep drawing and hard materials. Titanium Grade 2 and Grade 5 and Inconel 625 are machined in-house rather than routed to a third party. If your part is formed, drawn or pressed rather than milled from a billet, this is the work we do every day.
  4. IATF 16949 for automotive programmes. Protolabs publishes ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016, AS9100D and ITAR as its certification scope; IATF 16949 is not in that list. We hold IATF 16949. If your programme requires automotive quality-system certification, confirm the scope with each supplier directly.

Where Protolabs Has a Clear Advantage

  1. Speed, by a wide margin. One-day machined parts and hours-not-days quoting is a different category from our 7-day sample and 24-hour quote. If your programme is still iterating and each day of learning matters, their model is simply faster.
  2. Aerospace, medical and export-controlled work. Protolabs publishes AS9100D, ISO 13485:2016 and ITAR. We do not hold AS9100, NADCAP or ISO 13485, and we do not claim them. If your part needs those regimes, we are the wrong supplier and we would rather say so now.
  3. Several process families under one account, including 3D printing and injection moulding. We are a sheet metal, stamping, deep drawing and CNC plant. We do not do additive manufacturing and we do not do injection moulding. If your product needs both a printed housing and a stamped bracket, one supplier is less administration.
  4. Enterprise program management and track record with very large OEMs. A stated 90 per cent of Fortune 100 companies in target industries is a procurement signal we cannot match with a 85-person plant.

Which One Is Right for You?

Choose a digital manufacturer such as Protolabs if

  • You are still iterating and the value of a one-day part outweighs the piece price.
  • You need AS9100D, ISO 13485 or ITAR scope.
  • You need additive manufacturing or injection moulding in the same order.
  • Your volumes stay in the tens to low hundreds per design revision.

Choose a factory-direct manufacturer such as Beijing JCEN if

  • The part will be produced repeatedly, at volumes where tooling and unit cost dominate.
  • It is stamped, formed or deep drawn, and you want the die built and run by the same plant.
  • You need IATF 16949 scope statements or automotive-grade process discipline.
  • You want no MOQ, a 7-day sample and an engineer who reads the drawing before quoting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Beijing JCEN cheaper than Protolabs?

We do not publish a rate card and we will not quote a competitor price, so any flat yes or no would be guesswork. What we can say is where the cost structures differ: Protolabs prices speed and automated capacity, and we price tooling plus volume production. On a one-off machined part the comparison usually favours them. On a 20,000-piece stamped bracket with a die, the comparison usually favours a factory-direct route. The only reliable test is the same drawing and the same annual volume sent to both.

Can Beijing JCEN match one-day machining?

No. Protolabs states machined parts in as fast as one day. Our sample lead time is 7 days and our production lead time is 20 to 30 working days. We are not the right answer for a programme that needs a part tomorrow, and we would rather lose that order than miss that date.

Do you both hold the same certifications?

No. Protolabs publishes ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016, AS9100D and ITAR. We hold ISO 9001:2015 with registration 34025Q30296R0S, IATF 16949 and ISO 14001. We do not hold AS9100, NADCAP or ISO 13485 and we do not claim them. The overlap is ISO 9001. Which additional certification matters depends entirely on your end market.

Should I use Protolabs for the prototype and Beijing JCEN for production?

That is a common and often sensible split, and it works when two conditions hold. First, the drawing that goes to production must be identical to the one that was validated, or the DFM work done at prototype stage is wasted. Second, the production supplier should review the drawing before tooling is cut, because a change after the die exists is the most expensive change there is. Send us the validated drawing and we will run the DFM review before quoting the tool.
