What is Metal Stamping? A Complete Process Breakdown
Begin with a 2-line definition:
“Metal stamping is a high-precision manufacturing process that transforms sheet metal into specific shapes using specialized dies and presses. Widely used in automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries, this cost-effective method produces components like brackets, connectors, and chassis parts.”

What metal stamping suits
Stamping is the process for a part that repeats. Because the shape lives in the die rather than in the operator hands, every part that leaves the press is dimensionally identical, which is what makes a stamped batch uniform. Progressive dies carry a coil through a series of stations and finish the part as it leaves the last one, compound dies complete all the cutting in one stroke so the hole positions and the blank profile stay in exact relationship, and transfer dies carry separate blanks between stations for parts that are too large or too heavy to coil feed. Above roughly 5,000 to 10,000 pieces a year the die cost is recovered in the unit price; below about 1,000 pieces, laser cutting and bending is normally the cheaper route, and we will quote that instead.
What to send for a metal stamping quote
Send a DXF, STEP, STP, SLDPRT, PDF or DWG drawing, the material grade if it is fixed, the surface finish and the quantity. Tell us the annual volume rather than only the first order, because volume changes the tooling decision more than the part geometry does. Mark which dimensions are functional and which are reference. Engineering responds within 3 hours on working days, and the price, the lead time and a design for manufacture review come back within 24 hours. There is no minimum order quantity, so a single part can be quoted on the same basis as a production run.
What affects stamping cost and lead time
Die design and build is the largest single cost of a new stamped part, and it is why our tool room builds dies in house rather than buying them in. Press tonnage, strip nesting and the tolerance asked for on each feature follow. Material choice matters most on stainless and copper, where the sheet is often the dominant cost of the part. Production runs 20 to 30 business days after sample approval, plus tooling time before the run, and the tooling price is quoted separately from the piece price so you can see exactly what you are buying.
How stamped parts are checked
Incoming material is verified against the mill certificate before it is released to the press. In process checks track the critical dimensions across the run, not only at the start. A first article inspection report is measured on a coordinate measuring machine with a stated measuring accuracy of +/-0.002 mm, and 100 percent of critical dimensions are verified before shipment. Records available with the order include a CMM dimensional report, a first article inspection report, an EN 10204 material certificate, coating thickness readings and hardness results where heat treatment is involved. Third party inspection by SGS, TUV or BV can be arranged at any point.
Common mistakes buyers make when specifying stamped parts
The most common mistake is applying a tight tolerance to every dimension instead of marking the few that are functional, which raises the tool cost without improving the part. Others are choosing a process before the volume is known, leaving the material grade unstated, and changing the design after the die is cut, at which point an edit becomes a tool change. Sending the drawing with the annual volume and the finishing requirement in one step answers most of these questions before a quote is prepared.
Frequently asked questions
When does metal stamping become cheaper than laser cutting?
As a working rule, below about 1,000 pieces a year laser cutting and bending is usually cheaper because there is no die to pay for. Above roughly 5,000 to 10,000 pieces a progressive die normally wins on total cost. Between those figures it depends on part complexity, so a drawing and an annual volume can be priced both ways.
What is the minimum order quantity for metal stamping?
There is no minimum order quantity, and a single piece can be run for prototype validation. The real threshold is the tooling, so for very low volumes a quote for laser cutting and bending is often the better answer.
Do you design and build the stamping dies in house?
Yes. Progressive, compound and transfer dies are designed and built in our own tool room, which keeps the tooling, the parts and the tolerances with one supplier and one inspection record.
